The Foundation For Medical Excellence 2012 OHSU Medical Student Scholar Program
You are invited to apply for a medical student scholarship supported by The Foundation For Medical Excellence (TFME), a public, nonprofit, Oregon-based educational foundation dedicated to advancing excellence in medicine, to improving the quality of healthcare and to promoting sound health policy.
The purpose of the TFME Medical Student Scholars Program is to:
- Enhance professional development of student physicians
- Reduce the cost of medical education
- Promote future practice in Oregon
The TFME Scholars program annually provides 6-12 medical school scholarships in the amount of $5,000.00 each. Currently, there are 7 MS3 students who will continue as scholars for 2012-13. Therefore, TFME will select up to 5 new scholars for 2012. TFME Scholars are invited to participate in the TFME professional development programs including distinguished lectureships on health policy and healthcare, the Physician Well-Being Conference and other TFME programs related to professional skills enhancement and medical excellence.
Applicants must:
- Be second year medical students in the current academic year at OHSU
- Plan to be enrolled as a MS3 clerkship during 2012-13
- An Oregon residents prior to medical school matriculation
- Have accrued medical education debt
- Give TFME permission to contact OHSU Financial Aid Office to recieve your total debt/loan amount and EFC
Applicant evaluation criteria include:
Solid academic achievement Professional development Community service and good citizenship Interpersonal and communication skills Potential to be an outstanding physician Interest in practicing medicine in Oregon

The John Kitzhaber, MD, Lectureship on Healthcare Policy was established in 1993 to recognize Dr. Kitzhaber's nationally recognized contributions to the citizens of Oregon as State Senator and Governor through his pioneering leadership in legislating the Oregon Health Plan. This lectureship focuses on issues related to economics and public policy in healthcare.
The Foundation For Medical Excellence's 2011 John Kitzhaber, MD, Lectureship on Healthcare Policy was held on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at the Portland Hilton Hotel. The Foundation was very pleased that this year's speaker was the Honorable John Kitzhaber, MD, Governor of Oregon. Governor Kitzhaber's talk was entitled:
